Labyrinth Overview
"Once upon a time, there was a beautiful young girl whose stepmother always made her stay home with the baby. The baby was a spoiled child. He wanted everything for himself, and the girl was practically a slave. But what no one knew was that the Goblin King had fallen in love with her, and given her certain powers. So one night, when the baby had been particularly cruel to her, she asked the goblins for help. 'Say your right words,' the goblins said, 'and we'll take the baby to the goblin city, and you will be free.' But the girl knew that the king of the goblins would keep the baby in his castle forever and ever and turn it into a goblin, so she suffered in silence, until one night, when she was tired from doing housework, and hurt by the harsh words of her stepmother, and she could no longer stand it."
"I wish the goblins would come take you away right now."
Then the goblins came and took the baby, and a snowy owl flew to her window and then transformed into Jareth the Goblin King in a cascading sparkle of glitter.
Then Sarah thought, "Oops, I should try to get my brother back," and blinked, and then realized "Hey, Jareth looks quite hot."
Then all the fans chorused as one, "Well, duh, it's David Bowie."
Jareth puts the baby at the center of his labyrinth, and gives Sarah thirteen hours to find and rescue him before the baby is turned into a goblin forever. She sets off into the labyrinth. Jareth sits up in his castle watching her via his crystal balls, and occasionally breaking into song. Every now and then he gets grumpy and interferes with Sarah's progress through the maze, looking hot all the while.
Along the way Sarah has interesting adventures, solving puzzles and escaping traps with and by the muppets who inhabit the maze, making friends and influencing people.
The little blue worm and his wife live in between the bricks of the labyrinth wall.
Hoggle is a rather rude dwarf of a gardener, who is deathly afraid of Jareth.
Tim, Jim, Alph and Ralph are pageboy gatekeepers to one of the labyrinth passageways.
The talking hands are hundreds of green hands growing from the wall of the tunnel leading to the oubliette.
Sarah: "That's not fair!"
Jareth: "You say that so often. I wonder what your basis for comparison is."
The wiseman and his talking hat offer advice to those lost in the labyrinth in exchange for a small donation.
Ludo is a rather large furry sort of creature, who can sing rocks into motion.
The fireys are a wild gang of singing, dancing creatures who can detach their own heads and limbs, and don't understand why Sarah can't or won't do the same.
Sir Didymus is a talking fox-creature, and also a knight who was tasked with guarding the bridge out of the Bog of Eternal Stench. He travels with his faithful steed, Ambrosius the dog (who is not a muppet most of the time).
The masquerade ball guests are costumed as goblins, but in decadent and elegant adult fashion. They may or may not be real, since Sarah gets to the masquerade via a poisoned peach and a crystal ball soap bubble.
I'll paint you mornings of gold, I'll spin you valentine evenings,
though we're strangers 'til now, we're choosing a path between the stars
I'll lay my love between the stars...
-- Jareth, As the World Falls Down
The junk lady is surrounded by all of the detritus of life, and her kind ensnare people into wearing living tombs of their own unneeded possessions.
Humungous is a mechanized goblin giant.
How you've turned my world you precious thing.
You starve and near exhaust me.
Everything I've done, I've done for you.
I move the stars for no one.
You've run so long, you've run so far.
Your eyes can be so cruel,
just as I can be so cruel,
though I do believe in you.
Yes, I do.
Live without your sunlight...
Love without your hearbeat...
I... I can't live within you.
-- Jareth, Within You
The big confrontation between Jareth and Sarah for baby Toby happens in a three-dimensional stairway-filled live-action version of M. C. Escher's Relativity.
Thing is, all of Sarahs new friends and many of the settings within the labyrinth look a lot like items from her own bedroom. So the whole adventure, from the moment she wishes Toby away, may be a dream or hallucination.
Jareth: "Everything that you wanted, I have done. You asked that the child be taken. I took him. You cowered before me. I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside-down, and I have done it all for you! I am exhausted from living up to your expectations of me."
Sarah: "Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the gobliin city, for my will is as strong as yours, and my..."
Jareth: "Stop! Wait! Look, Sarah. Look what I'm offering you -- your dreams."
Sarah: "And kingdom as great."
Jareth: "I ask for so little. Just let me rule you, and you can have everything that you want."
Sarah: "Kingdom as great... damn! I can never remember that line."
Jareth: "Just fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave."
Sarah: "My kingdom as great... my kingdom as great. You have no power over me. You have no power over me!"
Or perhaps not a hallucination after all... the final scene of the film is Sarah in her own bedroom, surrounded by her friends from the Labyrinth, hugging and dancing. And outside her window, a snowy owl flies alone out into the night.
Don't tell me truth hurts, little girl,
'cause it hurts like hell.

The film was released in 1986, and is now available on DVD. Thanks to the '80s being all cool and retro now, places like Hot Topic are carrying official Labyrinth merchandise.
Henson.com is the official Jim Henson Company website, and has all sorts of interesting stuff.
WorldOfFroud.com is dedicated to the art of Brian and Wendy Froud, and also has all sorts of interesting stuff.

There is a new manga called Return to Labyrinth being produced by TOKYOPOP.
The Green Awards for Labyrinth Fanfiction are talked about here in

Labyrinth info is another informative site.
The Masquerade of Jareth is a real live party in Los Angeles every year. Costumes and dancing and oh, wow, what a night. Yes, I've attended once, and hope to again. There's an unofficial comm for it,
lojmasquerade.
There's a big event each year in Oregon called Faerieworlds, a festival of art, music and imagination. I haven't attended yet, but absolutely want to.
There are similar faerie events going on in the UK this fall, too; you can find information about them on the World Of Froud Events page.

There are a lot of places online for mask-makers, masquerade costumers and cosplayers to hang out; the following popped up when I was hunting for comms which specifically included information somewhere about Labyrinth-themed costuming:

ETA: I wasn't quite sure the best way to mention this, so I'm tagging it on the end here... Jareth wears Very Tight Pants. Judging by reactions when I first posted to my own journal that I was tumbling head over heels into Labyrinth fandom, The Pants triggered more than a few instantaneous onsets of puberty back in the day...
