Why this must be read: "Closure" was a controversial X-Files episode and much fic was written in order to "fix" it. (A lot more ignored it completely.) This story takes a different approach, incorporating the events of the episode and the years of back story leading up to it and sets out to tell one possible -- and entirely plausible -- version of Samantha's story. It is beautifully written, with not an extraneous word to be found, and its spare language creates an atmosphere that is both serene and heartbreaking.

Scully was up out of her chair, almost to the door, when Skinner spoke.

"Mulder," he said. "I thought you might want to see this."

He had a folder in his hand, one of the ubiquitous manila folders, this one thin and unbent, which meant unused.

"A case?" Mulder asked.

Skinner shook his head. "Just some good news."

Mulder nodded and slid the folder on top of the stack he already carried in his hand.

Sometimes Scully wished she lived in simpler times, when every moment of importance was marked out by the clash of cymbals, or lightning. She missed rites of passage she had never experienced, the ritual cutting of hair, the traditional dances. She longed for Mass in Latin. She wanted to say that she missed these things because she was a traditionalist at heart, but it wasn't true. She wouldn't sacrifice her liberal age for the certainty of times past. The truth was not that she missed the "good old days" but that she missed the certainty of knowing which things were important, and which things were not. She missed the signs.

That was all it was, the simple passing of paper from one hand to another. In her memory, it is so much more.
