Why this must be read: This month I'm trying to rec fics that are representative of both the slash and gen sides of the Band of Brothers fandom, and I thought that there was no better introduction to the gen than this many-layered story. For one thing, it's a meaty character study of post-Bastogne Malarkey, who--as one of the characters who changes most dramatically in the series--really needed one. For another, it often shades toward ensemble fic, with wonderfully in-voice cameos from Roe and Luz. It makes use of (the very difficult) second-person narration to great effect, and with great thoughtfulness; and on top of all that, it's just a rich, satisfying piece of storytelling in its own right, with a carefully orchestrated ending that will knock your socks off.
"Just ask, Doc," you demand. "Just ask if I'm okay. Ask if I'm losing my mind. Because I don't know what to tell you, Doc. I can run and I can shoot and I can dig and I can kill all the Krauts you throw my way. But I can not tell you I'm not going off my fucking head."
