Why this must be read: This has to be read to be believed. I wouldn’t have thought that this premise could ever be pulled off believably with these two characters, but lolitaray did and made it poignant, poetic, aching, and beautiful all at once.

Ennis turned his head slightly towards Jack, who was resting further back past the tattered rug, lounging half on the cracked, weathered wooden boards. Words didn’t come easily to Ennis; when he did try to speak, his words fell, rough as tattered bark, from his mouth.

What's your take on the rest of the series?

It isn't really along the same lines as this first part. I really almost think the first part stands alone. The rest of the series has high drama, angst, tension, and a lot of very well-written smut. I do recommend it, just not on the same basis as this :) It's complete at 16 parts, although not all the parts are linked there in that post.
