The Bloody Stare of Mars (R)

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Ron Weasley / Hermione Granger Hermione Granger / Severus Snape
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63
Author Website: Yahtzee: Genre Edition
Why this must be read:

Because the 'What happens if Voldemort wins?' genre is a significant part of the fandom. Yet not often a terribly satisfying one. After all, if Voldemort wins the overwhelming probability is that everyone dies, probably unpleasantly -- which is hard to work up into a satisfying narrative.

Yahtzee never flinches away from the reality of her premise, but there's a thin thread of hope running through the story as well. And the world she creates isn't merely a trite re-working of apocalyptic stereotypes, but a real one that might, in the context, come to be.

The same applies to her characters. Hermione, despite her traumas and defeats, is still recognisably Hermione -- but a Hermione who has suffered traumas and defeats. That balance runs through the story, and makes its dark aspects all the more effecting.

It's also one of the very few Snape / Hermione stories which deserves to be described as plausible. Although anyone wanting hearts and flowers is, as you've probably gathered, in quite the wrong place.
