Why this must be read: There's an almost hypnotic rhythm tocherryice's story, one that's hard to clarify or classify in what feels like a meaningful way. She starts with a visceral description of Nathan arriving in the desert and spins that into a haunting, layered character study about Nathan, fatherhood, the Petrellis and life.
Her Nathan here is so battered, so tired and yet moving on with the stubborn, deliberately blind singlemindeness that's his defining characteristic. She humanizes him, without softening him...and believe me, that is not easy to do.
