Hunter's Moon by Joe Lawson (NC-17)

Why this must be read:
I said at the beginning of the month that I was going to rec mainly gen, but I’m going back on my word and offering one slash novella.
Every fandom has its share of vampire Aus. Mag7 goes one better, and has a werewolf AU, for which Joe Lawson’s “Hunter’s Moon” serves as the establishing story.
Joe takes what ought by rights to be nothing but a set up for bad porn (complicated werewolf pack laws require Buck to sleep with each one of the other Seven), and manages to parlay it into a fic with actual plot and drama, where the sex is only a facet of the story, rather than the entire point. Even more impressively, Joe manages to present six different sex scenes that all read as reasonably in character and that don’t become repetitive. And I say this as a reader who has a habit of skimming sex scenes precisely because I generally find them repetitive.
Also, the Seven as a wolf pack is just a really nifty idea, and Joe makes it live up to its niftiness potential by generating an entire social structure for “Two Bloods,” and manages to fit the whole thing into the canon Old West universe without making it strain at the seams (too much).
