Depth Perception, by Limlaith (PG-13)

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: Buck/Chris (offscreen)

Why this must be read:

After Buck comes off a tough undercover assignment Ezra shares some bitter truths with him about working undercover - and the kind of man it takes to do the job. Short and insightful, this one haunts me.

Sample Depth Perception

A whisper of sound suddenly close made Buck turn his head. After a moment's recognition, he returned his gaze to the table and leaned to brace his weight on his arms, let something else hold him up for a while. He hadn't known to expect this, he hadn't seen it coming. He'd been so far out of his depth. No one told him that undercover work might require him to choose between fucking a child or getting her killed.

"I hope I'm not disturbing you, Mr. Wilmington," Ezra told his back. "Chris is still held up and I thought you might wish for some company."

More like Chris had sent him, ordering him not to let Buck out of his sight. The sting was over, they'd brought down the bad guys, and Buck couldn't bring himself to tell Ezra that the only company he wanted for the foreseeable future was a full bottle of Jameson and a shot glass – and Chris. Chris should understand that much.
