Why this must be read:

Have you ever been in a situation where everyone is trying hard to think of the other person first, but feelings get hurt anyway, just because of the fundamental natures of the people involved? 'Never Destroyed' is like that - sentimental, in a good way, giving us peeks into the souls of its protagonists. Vin asks Ezra for a favor that means a great deal to him, which leads to a spontaneous offer from Ezra. Chris disapproves because he fears Ezra has some ulterior motive that will ultimately cause Vin pain. The results are heartfelt and touching.

There are references to the lovely short story, 'The Good Book', by Linda. It's not necessary, but you might want to read it first.

Vin waited well past midnight, sitting at a table in the corner of the saloon. Waiting for Ezra. He was tired; if he didn't' fight it, he'd fall asleep. But Vin was used to keeping alert no matter how he felt, so he sat, and he waited. He kept an eye on the card game, waiting for the right moment that came at nearly 2am, long past when Vin would've normally found a place to sleep that night. As the last of Ezra's unhappy opponents muttered their way out into the darkness, Vin unfolded himself from the chair and wandered over. Ezra smiled when he saw Vin approaching him. Over the months they'd all known each other, Vin's past had been the most reluctantly - and most painfully - revealed. Ezra felt a new respect for the quiet tracker with each revelation, and found he was actually flattered whenever Vin sought his company.

"Why Mr. Tanner, how very pleasant to see you. This is an odd hour for you, is it not?" Ezra checked his pocket watch to be sure he hadn't been there till dawn.

"I'se waiting - I wanted - to ask you something. Ask a favor of you..." Vin stood away from the table, looking at Ezra from under the brim of his hat.

"Of course, Mr. Tanner, anything that is in my power." Ezra was serious. He motioned Vin to the closest chair. "How may I be of service?" Vin hesitated, then sat down. He looked unsettled. Slowly, he reached inside his jacket and brought out his mother's bible. He set it on the table but held onto it with both hands.
