Why this must be read: Because stories that show one of the pilots adjusting to life after the war are plentiful, but this is one of the best.
Quatre takes time off from the business to attend university, much against the wishes of his family. In order to fit in, he takes on an alias and lives on a budget, trying to learn how to live like an ordinary student.
I was nineteen when I realized dying in the war would have been horrendous, but my mentor had been right. Living was far more difficult. Living in the aftermath was sometimes impossible.
Oh, it seems quite naïve, looking back, but I recall distinctly the moment it dawned on me: the smell of new-mown grass, and the hot trickle of humidity pressing between my shoulder blades. My legs were sticky with sweat, tanned and scratched from the days I'd spent hiking from the house down to the river.
And I sat there, staring at the business papers piled on the garden table and thought: this is my life. This is what I have, and it's settled. Everything I have done... is done. I can't go back, and I can't change it.
