As You Walk Away by Vee (R)
Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Dick Winters/Lewis Nixon
Author on LJ:

Author Website: Pinkopolis
Why this must be read:
I tend to shy away from longer fics because all too often as the story progresses the wind deserts the sails. But if there's one thing I love it's to be proven wrong.
It's one of my favorite portrayals of Nixon as well as one of my favorite uses of the second-person narrative in general, it's his own voice talking to you - whether drunk, sober or drunk again. The end result, I assure you, is quite simply fantastic.
If you only get around to reading one chapter though, make sure it's three.
At least you're an elitist. You'd have downed turpentine were it not for your pretentious palate, which became even more finicky under alcoholic duress. Your particulars.
Outside, light a cigarette, regroup. Strategize. What else did you want? You wanted Vat 69. You wanted the President to be alive again. You hadn't even voted for him, claiming he was going to turn America into a socialist wasteland. You wanted Vat 69, and you wanted Roosevelt to still be alive at Warm Springs.
Those two weren't going to happen. But at least you were out of that house, and there was a fourth thing you wanted.
"God, Lew…" with every piteous word, he sounds like he's praying for you.

This fic is absolutely brilliant, as you say, and manages to stay *them* all the way through (and the graphics are amazing), but the ending. Man, the ending. I just *break*. I'm far too much of a romantic to read things like this.
Which is a weird way of saying, yes, this fic is incredible and well worth the read. Thank you for reccomending it and "forcing" me to re-read.
