Remember Me As a Time of Day, by Alanna (R)

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
Pairing: Lee/Kara
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_
Why this must be read:
This is my favorite post-Crossroads fic, for good reason. It's flawlessly written with enough of a mix of humor and angst to be engaging, and Alanna has a brilliant handle on characterization. It feels like something that could be on the show, and makes me long for this story to appear on screen. Basically it's really, really awesome. So go read!

She waits for the explosion. It's gonna be hard, gonna hurt like hell, but that's okay. She can handle it. The gods will take care of her. Send her up to the heavens where she can run laps and play pyramid with all Sam's pro friends. Smoke hand-rolled cigars and drink real ambrosia. Her skin always burnt in the sun, but this time she'll get a great tan. That's what Elysium's supposed to be like. Never gave it much thought – the cover charge is too high, and she's too broke – but now she thinks the gods just might let her in.

She waits for the explosion. Ten – nine – eight –

It doesn't come.

But the wind stops buffeting her face, and the engine stops. No shudder as it settles. It just stops, like someone flicked a switch.

Kara opens her eyes. Everything – everything – is white, like she's looking directly at a lightbulb. Except she can't see her cockpit, the cloud-mandala, or even her feet. Can't move a muscle, either. She tests her limbs. Nothing. But her face works, so she blinks. Something inside her feels different, but nothing hurts. She's not in pieces.

"What the frak is going on?" She feels her mouth move with the words, feels them scratch at her throat, but she can't hear the sound of her own voice.

She knows that this is insane, even by her standards. She should be scared, but she's not. Doesn't know how or why, but it's gonna be okay.

She closes her eyes and waits.
