Why this must be read: It's smart and sensitive and evocative in all the right ways. Plus, awesome Ellen voice.

Set after season three. Geoffrey’s in Montreal, alone, while Ellen finishes her contractual obligations. It's not really a pairing fic in one sense - it's about Geoffrey, and his passion and his humor and his slight off-centeredness from everything else in the world. But Ellen grounds him, in a way, and his new stage manager, and Anna, off in La Paz, and - it's just a wonderful, wonderful story. I particularly love Ellen, who seems to have stepped right out of S3. I can hear her perfectly.

The next day, Puck jumps off the edge of the stage and says, “Geoffrey, you’re soaking.”

“I know,” Geoffrey mutters, as the fairies giggle in the makeshift wings. “I know that, thank you.”

“You’ll get pneumonia,” warns the Unsinkable Molly from her perch on the edge of a table, stage right. “Why don’t you carry an umbrella?”

The reason, which Geoffrey doesn’t tell her, is that umbrellas are things that happen to other people. People who are not Geoffrey Tennant, and who see precipitation as just a phenomenon, water from the sky; people, in short, who have never tipped their heads back beneath a downpour and tried to catch the raindrops in their mouths. He pities that sort of person.
