Why this must be read:
It's Scripps dealing with Oxford and God and Dakin, and how anti-climactic university is and how nothing and everything changes. The fic delivers such a great sense that Scripps and Dakin really are best friends, and how Scripps knows Dakin so very well, and finds himself falling for him almost against his will. The romance is wonderfully understated and true to the characters (and, well, Dakin's hardly the romantic sort, after all), the language is funny and insightful and lovely in turns, andsolvent90 is a master of the gradual, wonderful, tortuous build-up, which makes the climax when they actually act on it that much more satisfying.
Dakin narrows his eyes. As always, he thinks he’s so mysterious, the pretentious wanker. But he gives over when Scripps raises his eyebrows back, unimpressed, and smirks instead. Lifts his glass in a mock toast. “But not you.”
Not him. He thinks about it, studying the scarred whorls and gouges in the table under his blunt fingernails. No. He supposes not. He’s never been much for romantic transformations.
When he glances up Dakin’s studying him with an oddly speculative sort of curiosity, waiting for his answer. Oh, fuck no. Another beat and he’s going to take Scripps’s silence for a challenge and letting Dakin see you as a challenge is not the way to a peaceful life. So he smiles and cops to it, shrugs his shoulders.
“Not me then,” he agrees. “I’m just here for the history,” and Dakin laughs, his expression fading back to the amused tolerance he keeps for Scripps, familiar. Good. Scripps takes another swallow of his beer, and then a deeper one, unsure why his pulse is suddenly hammering in his throat, like he’s just escaped something.
