Not Based on A True Story by Isilya (R)

Hi, I'm phaballa and I will be your popslash driver this month! Please excuse my enthusiasm. I have an unhealthy love of... everything.

Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Justin/JC, Nick/Howie
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] isilya
Author Website: http://untruism.net/index.html
Why this must be read: This fic is one of the cleverest, lovliest fics I have ever read, period. Justin is a BSB fanfic writer, and the way in which all the NSYNC guys are connected through fandom is so absolutely brilliant and yet achingly sad at the same time. He's writing his sort of last love letter/flame ball to fandom--a Nick/Howie epic AU in which BSB are fanfic writers. It's meta WITHIN meta, Justin's fic reflecting his own fandom experiences and all of it concentrating heavily on the writing process itself. I reccomend this not just to popslashers, but to anyone who writes fic, because it's really not about Justin at all, it's about being in fandom and what that means, good and bad.

You brush your teeth, staring at yourself in the mirror, thinking about how you came to be in fandom, who you've loved, who you've lost and all the reasons for you now to leave. You spit and rinse and pull out a length of floss, counting wanks and wars and flames in your head. These are going to be your firestarters; you are going to build your fire with the clique hostilities and inner circle politics you have stored in copy-pasted emails and chat logs.

Kind of a litany of unpopular fannish truths, if you like. Bizarre and slightly sickening sex triangles. Cat chemotherapy. Authors flaming their own stories under religious sockpuppets to rally support. Betrayal, backstabbing and the IP addresses of all 567 comments in the Anonymous Hate meme.

There is no good reason for you to reveal any of this, except you want to. Call it pyromania, but fandom has hurt you in so many ways, for so many years, that you can't be content just to slip out the back door, quietly abandon your livejournal and let your domain lapse. You started in Buffy, moved to Harry Potter, dabbled in Firefly and now you're in popslash. If you roast people from other fandoms, will they even hear about it? You don't know how fine a line to walk (you know people will recognise Britney in any fandom) and you don't know how broadly to draw your strokes. You're scared that if you lose the love story in the politics, you'll look like a sad has-been with an axe to grind.
