Put It Aside by JIN (PG-13)

Why this must be read: It's a classic and deeply poignant situation - two people have strong feelings for each other but are unable to act upon them due to situation or circumstance - expertly applied to Chris and Vin by Jin's understanding of character, time and place and her wonderfully subtle writing style. She uses the device of Chris and Vin annually escaping from town - and painful memories - on Christmas Eve to express how their feelings for each other evolve into something that will never be spoken of and forever put aside. Superb.

That third Christmas, it snowed. He'd almost turned around and headed back for town, but Vin had stubbornly forged ahead, so he went along, too, kicking himself the entire way. What was it about Tanner that made him give up all reason and follow blindly along behind? Chris knew he was considered the leader of their tight-knit group, but in reality, it was more often him trailing Vin than the other way around.

In front of him, beside him, behind him . . . didn't much matter, so long as Vin was close by. That scared him sometimes; needing another man like that. He couldn't get a handle on it, couldn't figure it, so he put it aside.

*Excellent* choice. Jin is one of the most under-noticed writers in this fandom and she's just awesome. And I ditto this selection - she's at her best her.

Oh - and the newest one by JIN, the anniversary story? Awesome as well. What most impresses me with her is that her gen stuff is as intense as her adult stuff. And her characterizations are just wonderful.
