The Year of Living by Merlin Missy (PG-13)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: gen, focusing on Tim Drake (Robin), Virgil Hawkins (Static), Richie Foley (Gear)
Length: medium
Author on LJ:
mtgat
Author Website: http://mtgat.livejournal.com/tag/fanfic
Why this must be read:
Because this fic is awesome. It takes something we learn about in Batman Beyond (a cartoon set 50 years after Batman: the Animated Series) and extrapolates it back to what must have happened during/after B:tAS. It's well written, the characters are well-rounded people, and it deals with the aftermath of trauma in a realistic way. It fills the gap perfectly. It is a crossover with the cartoon Static Shock, but you don't have to know anything more about that series than that Virgil and Richie are teen superheroes. In the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, we find out that years ago Joker had captured Tim Drake, tortured and brainwashed him, and had him in his clutches for several weeks. After his rescue, it took him a year to regain his sanity, at which point Batman told him he could never be Robin again, and Tim left, full of bitterness. This story is about what happened to him afterwards, trying to deal with what happened to him and regain his life.
Tim knew the expression on Virgil's face. He'd seen it enough times over the past two years. Some people showed it clearly, some people hid it almost perfectly, but he knew it all the same. Back in the day, he'd seen that expression on the nurses' faces in Leslie's clinic, when the rape victims came in for treatment. He'd probably worn it himself back then from time to time.
I know what happened to you and I feel bad for you and I don't know what else to say.
He unclenched his fists.
