Why this must be read: Considering what's been happening in San Francisco, I thought a domesticity rec would be appropriate. And they don't come much more domestic than doing laundry.

S-with-C has already had one of her Highlander pieces recced here, and no doubt more will appear since she's written many excellent stories. But this little snippet has always been a favourite of mine. Set a few decades in the future, she actually goes to the trouble of inventing a plausible culture. (Damn, that sounds boring, but believe me, it's not!) The interaction between Duncan and Methos is delightful, and the style is definitely frivolous. You just have to love a Highlander story that starts like this:

"Dry clean, dry clean, hopeless, dry clean..."

Methos paused in mid-toss, a lone tube sock half inside-out held between thumb and forefinger. "How the hell did you manage to get blood on your socks?" he yelled over his shoulder without looking behind him and pitched the offending article into the whites-only pile. On his socks. //Really.// What was the idiot Scot doing, dancing on the bodies after?

This is charming, funny, and in the end, rather lovely.
