‘Yes,’ Don said. ‘They would have shot us.’ They might not have had to bother with Don; they would have hit Charlie first, and Don thought he would probably just die on the spot if he saw Charlie get killed. His heart would just stop, like they were wired together, interdependent.
‘Oh,’ said Charlie. Then, fiercely, ‘Don.’ He seized the front of Don’s shirt in his hand and pulled him back, kissed him again. Don didn’t stop him, didn’t stop himself. The house was empty, now, and suddenly he wanted –
nobody move, nobody get hurt
