Why this must be read:
Oh, yeah. This. This... this is like a 'classic-era' popslash story, if there was a 'classic' era, at any rate. It reminds me, and gives me the same feeling of satisfaction, as my favourite Trickyfishes from everywhere. It's good, good stuff, written for the Make The Yuletide Gay SeSa last Christmas, and a very fine thing to find in one's stocking.
Essentially, Lance discovers that his smile is very effective. This discovery leads to many satisfactory moments with an assortment of bedazzled men, including certain of his bandmates. But then, he has to be kept under control, and this is frustrating, and then—oh, just read it. Read it again.
Apparently, gayness lurked everywhere. Lance had always suspected it might if only he dared look for it, but he'd thought that finding out would involve all kinds of complicated rules and awkward gay-detecting conversations. It hadn't even crossed his mind that a smile would do it. So he expanded his targets beyond hairdressers and bartenders and photographers, to professions he would never have imagined might respond to a smile, like the truck drivers, and the well-muscled guys who shifted heavy stuff around backstage and, in one exhilarating moment of insanity, a police officer on the street outside a club. Probably he would've gotten arrested, except that Chris happened by and caused a distraction by being loud and obnoxious, thus allowing Lance to come to his senses and escape. He smiled at the bouncer on the club door instead, and met up with him a couple hours later. Bouncers, he'd learned, always seemed to have a key for someplace private.
All in all, Lance couldn't imagine how his life could get any better.
