A Civil Contract by Sophonisba (G)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: None/Gen
Length: 2,196
Author on LJ: Sophonisba (
saphanibaal)
Author Website: The Ivory Tower
Why this must be read:
This was an amnesty entry to the Harlequin flashfic challenge, and I love it - it's also my only non-McShep rec, this month, I think - and the reason why? I adore alien cultures, done well there's nothing to touch them, and Sophonisba has managed that brilliantly in this fic. Ah, cultural misunderstandings! This fic reminds me of the Bren Cameron books by C.J Cherryh in its subtlety, and that gives me much glee! It's also a wonderful vignette showing Teyla at her diplomatic best.
In a market culture, to be given largesse is shameful; in a gift culture, to fail to return a gift is shaming. Teyla does not choose to let her people be shamed.
