Why this must be read:arislanchan is another author who made it really really hard to pick just one fic to rec; she's probably my favorite writer of second-arc characters out there, and she's written a LOT. Her Near, Mello, Mikami and Light voices are always incredibly on-point, and "Unspoken", although it features Near paired with Gevanni and not one of them, is no different (and Mello has as much of a presence in this as in any Near/Mello fic anyway :D). One of the few lengthy fics I've found for this odd little pairing, and Near is heartbreaking and cerebral and wonderful.
