Meeting of Minds by SEF (PG-13)

Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sef1029

Why this must be read:

For a show that has an SF setting, Stargate fanfic doesn't actually have a lot of, you know, science fiction content. This is, of course, not unusual for fanfic, and particularly in later seasons it's actually pretty true to the canonical form of what's become more of an action-adventure show, but I always appreciate it when an author hauls out some actual thinky SF for me to read about.

Meeting of Minds is set in early S7, shortly after Daniel's descension. SEF brings back the Gadmeer (from S4's "Scorched Earth") as an alien race with their own perspective and interests, and uses them to make some interesting points about the canon characters' different perspectives on loss. Plus, a Sam POV that felt right to me, which is always nice. SG-1 is all a little more emotionally useful than I think is strictly canonical, but because I am a Big Sap I don't mind.

We soon discovered that all four Gadmeer had voiceboxes programmed to sound like Daniel. I'm not sure if the choice was intended as a tribute or if the Gadmeer were insensitive to the normal human range of variation. Perhaps our voices all sounded like whale song to them.

After missing Daniel's voice for so long, it was odd to be surrounded by it in quadraphonic sound. I'm sure Daniel found his chorus annoying, but he was far too polite to say so in front of the Gadmeer. The colonel, of course, found endless amusement in the situation.
