Why this must be read: We never learn anything concrete about Gene's wife in canon. We don't know her name. We don't have any real sense of her relationship with Gene. Often, in Life on Mars fan fiction, she doesn't exist --- she ran off a long time ago, or she just isn't mentioned, and when she is, it's with bitterness, or regret.
So it's lovely when someone decides they'll write 'the Missus'. When we get to see her interaction with the Gene we know and love. I really enjoy this insightful study bychaletian. It says so much in few words.
