Everything's Jake by Alyjude (NC-17)
(this icon is from Lorraine Brevig’s original art, created for the Jake Universe. Isn’t it gorgeous?)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 409K

Why this must be read: Because Aly shows us what great parents Jim and Blair would be.
“Everything’s Jake” (also a slang term meaning “everything is great”) is a terrific story of love and growth. Typical Aly, it’s funny and warm but not without angst. Post series, Blair has become a detective. He’s moved out of the loft to quell the rumors that he and Jim are lovers, even though that’s what he would like them to be. He moves into a great place and makes friends with the landlady, who is raising her small grandson. Jake is precocious and quickly helps fill the void Blair is feeling in his life. Just before Halloween, she asks Blair to watch Jake for a few days. They visit Jim’s place on Poker Night, where Jake is introduced to all of their Major Crime co-workers and Blair’s parenting skills are put on display. Jim, missing Blair and loving him in secret as well, starts hanging around Blair’s place and, in fact, likes it better than the loft. Tragedy places Jake in Blair’s custody, and Blair decides to raise Jake with Jim at his side.

I have a guilty pleasure. I might need a 12-step program. I just love stories where Blair or Jim are parents. Both of these men are loving, giving, intelligent, wise, sensitive and well-rounded. Wouldn’t it be a shame if they didn’t pass any of that on to another generation? They both have parental issues – I’m sure that would make them aspire to be better parents. And, of course, if they were the biological fathers, would we see little sentinels and guides? LOTS of potential here. So, have I convinced you to join me? *g*

This story might be a little sweeter than you’re used to; after all one of the protagonists *is* a four-year-old. But Aly based Jake on one of her nephews, which lends authenticity to the situations, and her other original characters are well developed. Blair and Jim are mature here – not without insecurities, but prepared to make life-changing decisions. I hope you will give it a try.
Father’s Day Bonus: Behind the cut are the rest of the Jake stories, in chronological order, covering about a year’s time. Aly engages a village to raise Jake, including the MC gang, Naomi as a cool grandma and William as a doting grandfather. In the Full Circle trilogy, Blair’s father’s identity is revealed. How’s that for a Father’s Day extravaganza! Happy reading!

1) I don't know what force font color formatting is (I'm a real newbie at LJ) and
2)I don't think it's up to me. When I post to Crack Van, I type in just the words/links, plus with this one I did the LJ cut. CV sets the formatting and coloring. As an example, CV preferences have anything that's a link show up red. I looked at my entry compared to others and they all look the same to me. Sorry, I'm not even sure what an flist is or how you set the background!
If other Crack Van entries for you look different from mine, perhaps you can explain it so I can understand. I definitely would not want you to miss anything, especially this series which I love a lot. If you haven't read them, you are in for a real treat. I'm very happy that you *didn't* miss this entry! Enjoy!

Incredibly, no. Aly has five previous recs, which is pretty good representation. She just has so *many* stories to choose from so it's really not surprising that some of her classics haven't been mentioned yet. Also, I know some people don't care for kid fic at all. My mom used to say "Each to his own". *g*
I'll plan to rec some more Jim & Blair as parents stories the next time I get a chance to drive the bus. As I've mentioned, I'm definitely an addict!
