How to Shoot Somebody Who Outdrew You by Darkluna (NC17)
Quick Driver's Note: In addition to the BDS van, I'm driving the Death Note van. Hmmm, anyone but me seeing a connection between hot boys, violence, and vigilantism??? @-@
There isn't an overview for this fandom yet, but I may try and put one together this weekend. Still, as there are already recs available, I didn't see the point in waiting. :)
Personally, I am a die-hard L/Light fan, but in the interest of spreading the love, I will make lots of recs in lots of different pairings and even some gen!

Fandom: Death Note
Pairing: Mello/Near
Author on LJ:
darkluna
Author Website: Master List of Fanfiction
Why this must be read: I am not a huge fan of Near or Mello. I'm not a huge fan of Near/Mello. But, dear God, this was excellent. I had the pleasure of rewriting one of
darkluna's fics for remix this year and right in the middle of that, she posted this gem. It about sent me into conniptions, because it's one of those rare fics that makes me think, "Why do I bother even trying?"
I got over that, and then had the pleasure of gushing and telling her how fantastic this is. Once you read it, you'll understand and gush too.
Author's Summary: Near was almost enough of a bastard to be interesting, Mello thought sometimes, but quickly banished that idea, making a mental note to possibly burn it out of his brain if he could find the offending synapses.
The first day Near came to classes, Mrs. Baker introduced him to everyone. He was all icy-pale and sickly-looking, perfectly expressionless. Mello had seen enough new kids to know the look of careful blankness most put on. He'd done it himself the first day, presented to a roomful of strangers with nothing but a name, and that not even his real one. But this kid, he looked at them all as if nothing had ever impressed him, and nothing ever would.
Mello turned to Matt and rolled his eyes. The redhead shrugged, but that was Matt for you, always willing to reserve judgment, even on someone who was obviously a superior little git.
"Why?" Matt had asked him once. "What's so awful about him?"
Matt was allowed to question him, mostly because he really was just curious.
"Well," Mello had said, "he just gets on my nerves."
