Why this must be read: As a fan of L/Light (or Light/L), I find the period of time where Light has lost his memories to be particularly telling. What kind of person would Light have been if he'd never found the Death Note? Well, the Yotsuba Arc tells us, which makes the reality all the more heartbreaking.

As is this fic. Told from first person Light's POV, it not only talks about the difficulty of showering while chained to someone (*ahem*), it also gives us a rare glimpse into the mind of a killer who really believes he's innocent. Even better (worse?), this fic shows us everything Light lost when he decided to try and save the world from itself and lost himself in the process.

Author's Summary: The Kira case is chugging steadily on but Light is having trouble dealing with the constant suspicion hanging over his head and having to constantly defend his actions and thoughts not only to L and the task force, but to himself. Being chained to the head detective naturally doesn't help matters and something finally pushes Light past his limit...

“Is something wrong, Light-kun?” I blinked once through the remaining black dots that blurred my vision and turned slowly to face L. A stick of what he called Pocky was sticking out of his mouth as he munched on it. He had run out of his usual candy sticks and cakes and had to tuck into his rations of slightly less disgustingly sweet foods to sustain himself until more could be purchased. His near-black eyes pierced right through me like they always did. The same look he gave me every day. The “you are Kira” look. He was just waiting for me to admit it.

But I don’t break down that easily. I don’t give in to people to ease my troubles. I don’t ever forfeit.
