The Decemberists Series by
lozenger8 (Rating between PG and NC-
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt
Length: total series length, approx. 20,000 words
Author on LJ: Loz
Author Website: Fic list on her journal
Why this must be read:
This is actually a series of 7 stories, being:
We Both Go Down Together [NC-17]
Red Right Ankle [PG]
How I Dreamt I Was An Architect [NC-17]
Of Angels and Angles [PG-13]
Billy Liar [PG]
The Perfect Crime #2 [NC-17]
The Sporting Life [PG-13]
Loz's summary is Sam and Gene find themselves in a tight situation and snatch a stolen moment when they're caught in an explosion. After rescue, they have to navigate successful criminal capture with damaged bodies and conflicted emotions.
And that is an excellent summary of a beautifully written series of stories. Sam and Gene are trapped together in a very confined space after an explosion, and it looks for a time as if they will both die. Given that probable scenario, Gene decides to tell Sam things he would probably never have said during the normal course of their lives. While this is a very popular story concept, Loz sucks you in as the story unwinds, because with these two characters as Loz writes them so eloquently, nothing is every straightforward.
It's written in third person present tense, which is a style I tackle only when under the influence of mind-altering substances, but Loz handles it with convincing style, and its immediacy sucks you right into the tale.
A sample:
Sam knows he's pushed Gene too far. Gene's ability to calm down has shattered and he's close on berserk. The bloodlust has returned to his gaze. He hits Sam like he means to murder him, and Sam hits back, striking out for any flesh he can. His knuckles ache and his chin's sore, but it's right. This is what they had before any of this began. The physical expression that said everything they needed to say. It's a lie, but it makes him feel better.
"I could kill you with a punch," Gene says suddenly.
"Do it, then," Sam replies. He laughs, the sound thick and muffled. "Make your life easier, wouldn't it?"
Gene sounds strained, like a twig on the verge of snapping. "You really think I'm capable of it."
"I think you've proved that with the proper motivation you're capable of anything, Gene."
Gene slams Sam into the wall, hands under his armpits, face only inches away.
"Anything at all," he grinds out, then crushes Sam's lips with his own.
Few fan writers just get these characters the way Loz does. Go read the first story WE BOTH GO DOWN TOGETHER and share the pleasure.
