Why this must be read: Because Matt Saracen doesn't get enough love from anyone, except his Grandma, and even then he's so busy taking care of her that he has a hard time seeing it. It's impossible to pick the most heart-breaking character on this show, but Saracen is definitely in the running. He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, so much so you can see him physically straining under the weight. I had hoped season 2 would be easier for him than season 1 but it wasn't. This fic takes a look at Saracen through out season 2. It gets inside his head and puts you in his shoes. The voices and characterizations are fabulous.

Matt spends the pep rally casting his eyes around for Julie. It’s not like he has to concentrate at it, ‘cause it’s all Smash’s show anyway. Matt may as well not be there for all anyone notices him.

Matt’s no good with the spotlight but he sure doesn’t like the shadows he’s being forced towards. Especially when Julie finally shows with a, “I think we need to talk.” Matt knows where this is headed. Julie stutters and fumbles her way around whatever the truth is. She tells him it’s not The Swede when Matt knows, thinks it is.

Whatever the reason, Julie has her space. The world feels too big and Matt’s lost in it.
