Why this must be read: Another story that touches on the legend of Francis Drake, this time the story that he was a wizard who sold his soul to the devil to gain the power to control the winds. Odsbodkins recasts the story of Drake and Doughtie as an old sea tale, leaving us with a sense of mystery and wonder at the end.

Drake was young, and little learned in magic. He knew a few spells and charms, but when he went to be part of the Queen's army in Ireland you could not have called him a magician. Thomas Doughtie was the great magician in Ireland. You will say you have not heard of him, and how could you not have heard of such a great magician? Doughtie was Essex's man – not one to boast of his powers, happy to see credit go to his master. His joy was in learning, of all the arts of men – it mattered nothing to him whether he had renown.

Doughtie saw power in Drake. He did not think it seemly to take him on as apprentice – Drake was there as a soldier after all. Perhaps if he had taught Drake as a pupil, not an equal? But even the mightiest wizard cannot change the past. Drake's power grew, till he could bend stone, fire, wind and water to his will. The court grew afeared of Essex, that he had two such wizards in his train, and great plots were formed against him. Doughtie and Drake turned aside many a dagger aimed for their Lord.
