Why this must be read: In the grand tradition of leaving the best for last, I present to you one of the most loved stories in the fandom. I’ve been reccing a lot by [livejournal.com profile] alinewrites , and there’s a good reason for it: if you want hot and angsty, you can’t do better. This story, known when a WIP only as “The Spanish AU” is presented here as it appeared in our fanzine, Fquie #4, as a fully developed novella. It is a true AU, where Thomas Doughtie is born a Spaniard, Tomas Valiente. Purporting to be an actual historical record, it is full of delightful details, including supposedly “found” correspondence between Drake and Valiente. Ironically, positioning Drake and Valiente as enemies on the political spectrum does nothing but improve their relationship, and although there is much, much angst on the road to happiness, this tale has one of the most satisfying endings in all of DV fiction. As always, Aline’s writing is rich and full of sensuous detail, as in this passage from the episode titled, “Solace,” which just happens to be one of the hottest scenes I’ve ever read:

“Deceptive artificial knave,” Drake roared, keeping Tomas pinned to the sand while he got rid of his trousers. He managed to get out of his soaked shirt single-handed, and brought it down hard on the Spaniard's firm buttocks, again and again like a whip, Tomas growling in pain as his skin reddened. Fighting Drake's hold on him, he managed to overpower him, throwing him down. They rolled together on the sand, entangled, water splashing all over them: a fight. A playful, arousing fight, but still a fight, their gazes sparkling with the excitement of it, blows landing haphazardly, hands grabbing hair, trying to get a grip on slippery skin. They were soon panting and hard and none of them would have the upper hand. Tomas was breathless and snarling, Drake focused and frowning.

When Tomas finally subsided, Drake straddled him, a strong grip around his wrists to keep him pinned to the ground, his body weighing over Tomas'. “What do you want?” he asked breathlessly.

Tomas looked deep into the Dragon's eyes and quivered. “Have your way with me, Captain General.”
