Fandom Overview: Being Human

Premise: A vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost share a flat in Bristol.

So what is Being Human?

Being Human was one of six pilots that aired on BBC at the beginning of 2008. The idea was to let a number of shows create pilots and then pick up one or two of them to make full series out of. Being Human was picked up for a full six episode series to be aired sometime in 2009. Unfortunately it appears that the show was given a complete overhaul and everyone but George was re-cast. How this will effect things is unknown, but the essential premise is the same: Three supernatural creatures attempt to create a normal life despite the difficulties.

Characters

The vampire, Mitchell: Photobucket

Mitchell is a bit cliche as tv vampires go. He doesn't like killing people, views being a vampire as a curse, and it's implied that he didn't use to think this way. What is different is that he's not trying to "make up" or "atone" for his previous sins. He works as a janitor at the local hospital and still shows up at all of the mandatory vampire meetings. There is an attempt to create a vampire sub-plot that fell flat for most of the audience. Essential this involved the vampires starting some sort of war against the humans, we only had one episode so this wasn't really gone into a lot. Most of the fandom seems to feel that this is cliche and that it didn't connect well with the rest of the show.

The vampires themselves are interesting though. They can, and do, eat food. When they get turned into vampires they do actually die, to the point where autopsies can and do get preformed. They has some heightened senses, hearing at least. They can go out in the sunlight, although covering up their skin and wearing sunscreen while doing so is preferred. It is also possible for a vampire to go without drinking blood, at least that's what Mitchell is attempting to do. He calls it "going on the wagon" and he doesn't seem to know whether or not it'll actually work. He just thinks it might be a good idea to stop killing people.

The werewolf, George: Photobucket

George became a werewolf approximately two years ago. He pulled a disappearing act and his family thinks that he's dead. While George doesn't like being a werewolf at all he is learning to live with it. He has a genius level IQ and works as a porter at the hospital. George is desperate to be normal, but he is also able to laugh at the situation as well.

Werewolves in this universe only change during the full moon, so they've stayed pretty traditional there. George at one point does mention that other things are effected by the lunar cycle though. His senses become sharper, he becomes stronger, and it's implied that he becomes a bit more aggressive. George normally wears glasses, except around the full moon when he doesn't need them. George is also Jewish.

The ghost, Annie: Photobucket

Annie died about two years ago. She doesn't say how, except that it was quick. When George and Mitchell find her she hasn't been outside in all that time. She's pretty much terrified of the thought of leaving the flat. Annie also liked to make tea, she can't drink it, but she likes the routine. In a conversation with Mitchell she gives a very disturbing image of the afterlife, "the corridor with the men at the end with sticks and rope."

Annie came in later in the episode, after George and Mitchell rented the flat. She was kinda the surprise bonus for them. She has a bit of a ruff start with George due to him wanting things to be normal and Annie being anything but. They do eventually become friends though. Annie is also forced to confront her fear of the outside world when George's ex-girlfriend accidentally locks herself into a room with George right before the full moon.

Minor characters

Herrick: Photobucket

Herrick is the head vampire in the area. He and Mitchell seem to have some sort of history, but it wasn't more then hinted at. Herrick doesn't appreciate Mitchell's current way of life. This is mainly because vampires see werewolves as little more then animals and really don't like Mitchell hanging out with George.

Julia: Photobucket

Julia was George's girlfriend. She finds out George is alive when she's admitted to the hospital he works at because of her epilepsy. It's when she's attempting to figure out what the hell is going on with George that she follows him and gets locked into his safe room with him. After Annie gets her out of the room she sees George transform. She later tells him that it's too much for her and leaves.

But they've been recast!

That's right. So for Mitchell we have Aidan Turner and Annie is Lenora Crichlow. Rumors state that Herrick has also been recast and there is no word on Julia. The article on the subject doesn't mention them though.

And the pairings are?

The main pairing is George/Mitchell as it tends to be seen as kinda obvious:

The only other pairing of note is Mitchell/Herrick, although there was a small contingent of George/Annie shippers. There is of course the obvious problem with shipping anyone with Annie as she is a ghost.

Where's the fandom at?

[livejournal.com profile] beinghuman_fans: General discussion/news group
[livejournal.com profile] beinghuman_fic: Accepts all fic
[livejournal.com profile] vampwolf_love: George/Mitchell, pretty much just fic.
[livejournal.com profile] beinghumanslash: General slash community, hasn't been updated in quite awhile.
[livejournal.com profile] beinghuman_lims: Last Icon Maker Standing for Being Human.
[livejournal.com profile] flanaganlove: For fans of Guy Flanagan. He plays Mitchell.
[livejournal.com profile] toveylove: For fans of Russell Tovey. He plays George.

This is the state of the fandom as of now. With the recasting most people are hanging in there with a heavy dose of skepticism. No one really knows how the recasting of the show will effect everything and we won't find out until January. Unless they pushed back the series start date.

Disclaimer: Overview is (with small changes) much the same as the fandom pitch I gave over at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_of_one. Why mess with something that works?

"BRISTOL MASSSSSIIIIVE"

I have never seen this show. Do they shoot it in/around Bristol?

I'm not sure about the recasting. What I liked about the original actors is that they looked like normal people, especially Mitchell. The new actor looks like an actor and a glamour version of a vampire.

Anyway, looking forward to your recs^_^

Errrr. Wait. Whom did they recast? And when, in January, is the series start date, do we know?

The main pairing is George/Mitchell as it tends to be seen as kinda obvious

And if there are people who don't see it, could you please tell me how that's possible? Hee!

About the third scene in starts witha completely gratuitous shot of the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Being as I am a Brunel fangirl, that got more enthusiasm than the naked George did...
