Why this must be read:
finding_jay uses fascinating stylistic parentheticals to bring us a Frank who simultaneously resents and craves Hawkeye's popularity - a Frank who desperately wants to strike back at those who wield power over him (past and present). The back story presented by the author here is so frighteningly plausible that I am tempted to adopt it as my own personal fanon.
Frank’s brother was always bigger than he was. Granted, he was older, and therefore allowed to be, but even as adults he was taller. He always intimidated Frank- he could do it by a look, or a gesture, or even by entering the room.
Frank hates being intimidated. Despite feeling that he will always be, he loathes to be intimidated. Just once- just once- Frank would like to be the powerful one. Sometimes he achieves it. Sometimes he manages to strike fear into the hearts of those around him. It doesn’t last long, though, and Frank knows it (it hurts him, upsets him, that he can’t be like Hawkeye).
Frank remembers when he was nine, he and his brother had gone for a walk with their parents (Frank hates his memory). He had just started swimming lessons, and he wasn’t too fond of them. It took up his time when he could have been learning tricks on his yo-yo.
They were rounding a bend. There was a pond, Frank remembers. It was covered in algae, and Frank doubted that anything could live in it.
(This part always catches him by surprise). It all happened so suddenly. One minute, he’s walking with his parents, next to his brother, the next…
Algae tastes like moldy duck, Frank has decided. He remembers his brother pushing him into the water, clumps of green, frothy water rushing up to meet his surprised, open-mouthed face. Frank remembers splashing about, his brother laughing, his mother surprised, his father…
(Frank doesn’t like to cry, doesn’t like it at all.)
His father. Strong man, independent (‘Come on, Frank, what’ve we been paying those pricks for? Singing lessons? C’mon, you pansy, swim over, I ain’t getting my shoes wet!’).
Frank hates swimming to this day.
(That’s the best, and that’s the test in it.)
