Why this must be read:
Author's summary: Alien mindgames. Should be understandable if all you know about Secret Invasion is that the Skrulls invaded.
I confess, I only knew what I had heard about the Marvel Secret Invasions stories. But, I follow Astonishing X-men and this was utterly brilliant. This story takes place after the last battle, when Earth has won a tentative victory, but lost so many people along the way. Agent Brand, introduced in Astonishing, fills her position here as the head of S.W.O.R.D. and does what she can to clean up in the aftermath.
While I was unaware of some of the goings on here,selenak gives her readers everything they need to follow the plot and focus on the characters. And this is a truly stunning piece about Agent Abigail Brand, Dr. Henry McCoy and the world they live in.
Plus the Abigail Brand/ Hank McCoy relationship as mentioned here took my breath away. This is one of my absolute favorite Marvel fics and I'm so happy to be able to share it!
The Skrull waiting for her in the NYPD interrogation room which had been temporarily annexed for the purpose was the third, and he looked as numb as she felt. The device Richards had whipped up to prevent more shapeshifting hummed behind the door that closed as soon as she had entered. The Skrull didn’t even raise his head, but she recognized him, nonetheless, and for the first time in a while, Abigail Brand felt there might be a point to what she had been ordered to do.
