Why this must be read:
Sometimes G-rated is a good thing. Sometimes it's perfect for what a story is trying to show us. This is an understated story that says a lot without saying anything directly. Shawn has been hurt and is in the hospital, and Lassiter doesn't like how that feels. In fact, Lassiter needs to know he's okay, even if he doesn't know exactly why. So he's a little hesitant, especially since if Shawn were feeling better, he'd make a bigger deal out of the unexpected concern.
But Shawn isn't feeling better. And the way he reacts to Lassiter in this story, quiet though it is, is absolutely precious. If anything, this story is just about that moment. They don't talk, of course not, and there's nothing sugary sweet. All there is, is a gorilla in an evening dress, a red rubber ball, and, hopefully, some crayons.
