Why this must be read: "Fighting to Survive" is a snippet set in the middle of DG's "Survival" series, which chronicles Sam's long and difficult recovery after he his kidnapped and brutally beaten. (Links to the rest of "Survival" can be found at her site above.) Rather than stories of pain and loss, these are really about the strength of Gene and Sam's relationship and how it is tested, changed, and made stronger by the entire experience. DG hasn't been writing/posting the various "Survival" fics in chronological order and I picked "Fighting to Survive" because it was the first she posted - the original story that created this world. At the beginning you're not sure what Gene and Sam are fighting about, but gradually it all becomes clearer and you're left fighting for Sam along with Gene. This is one of the fics that I reread the most.

There are some mild references to violence and a small bit of sex.
