Why this must be read: I've already recced [livejournal.com profile] boombangbing once this month, but I had to include this story in the line-up as well. I like it most of all because it's so unique. I've never read anything quite like it in the Heroes fandom. A great deal of the story can be summed up by "Claire in space." Which sounds very cracky, and it sort of is, except that it's also tragic and bittersweet. It's very scifi-informed, and the author cites Firefly, Starship Troopers, and DS9 as influences on the style and content. The story traces Claire through "generations" of her life (or rather the generations of people around her) and how living over and over comes to change her.

She twigged to it when she hit thirty-five without a wrinkle on her face or a grey hair on her head. It was weird.

Her life from that point was a series of acts. Act one: a young girl enters, act two: first love, loss of virginity, marriage, children, act three: betrayal, divorce, death, and please turn to page one, rewind the tape. Except, her first love was never her first, her virginity had long been lost to dark-haired boy who'd reminded her of someone else, and her death never took.

Immortality isn't a thing one just takes to; like any skill, it has to be learnt. It was hardest in her 'first' generation, watching her family die around her broke her unbreakable heart too many times to count. But after, it was freeing, in a sick sort of a way. She was a pretty girl, she'd never be short of opportunities.
