Why this must be read: Because Adam had plans, big plans. And he's been around long enough that those plans might have been in motion for centuries at least. The series itself has just touched on the possibilities of engineering specials, and without modern technology and with his god complex this fic shows an Adam that's the kind of crazy that's capable of some long term planning.
With a great Adam-voice and a long perspective, this takes Adam through the centuries of scientific discoveries that define but don't limit him - to a Petrelli whose line he's been carefully manipulating, in Peter. It's a creepy illustration of a man who might still be capable of the occasional humourous drunken stupidity, but who's firmly placed almost everyone else on the other side of 'one of them' and would be quite capable of rubbing them all out.
There have been a handful of empaths in the past fifty years or so--all of them a result of Adam's engineering in family lines. It takes at least three generations of careful breeding, and even then, it's statistically unlikely. In the early days of the Company, when the first one had shown up, one of the geneticists Adam had hired had seen it as a defect...a sign of too much interbreeding and interference. The evolutionary equivalent of hemophilia.
The man had quietly disappeared that night. Adam refuses to have his plans questioned in such a manner.
Later, though, watching the young woman through heavy glass as she rocked and screamed, switching from power to power she'd accidentally absorbed and completely unable to control a single one or turn them off, he'd privately wondered if he hadn't miscalculated again.
