Why this must be read:
The recent X-Men: First Class series by Jeff Parker gave X-Men fandom many wonderful things, not least of which was a new, retconned teenage friendship between Wanda Maximoff and Jean Grey. With several awesome plots in the comic proper and adorable backup stories drawn by Colleen cover, the friendship soon gained quite a cult following in the fandom, and much femslash was written. But almost all of these fics focused on the teenage friendship itself, in the happy bubble in which the XMFC cast found itself.
This fic is different. This fic features three vignettes that take place years later, when that happy bubble has been popped and both of these women have begun to spiral off onto paths that will eventually lead, in different but similar ways, to near-omnipotent power and subsequent emotional collapse. How, then, would that friendship have affected those paths – how would they have talked to each other about their overwhelming powers? How would they have tried to help each other? Those are the questions this fic sets out to answer, and it does so beautifully. Plus, while I fully appreciate femslash between these two, female friendship stories are few and far between in fandom, and it’s great to see one that’s so well-drawn.
