Why this must be read: Ana is one of the luminaries of Firefly fandom, of course---and with good reason!---but also this particular story is the Kaylee/Inara fic for me. Naturally, this story has all of Ana's usual strengths: wonderful dialogue, strong characterizations, excellent relationship dynamics, and a sense of trueness about her 'verse and everyone in it. On top of those sterling features, this story also features an exploration of the characters and how they grow and evolve after the events of the Big Damn Movie that is utterly fascinating and deeply thoughtful; this adds a richness and depth that is completely compelling and thoroughly believable. Kaylee and Inara are very much still themselves in this fic, but dealing with the trauma of the BDM allows things to change within themselves and between each other in ways that seem very real and right to me. Also, Ana's lovely and incisive use of imagery and colors to underscore her main theme is delightfully impressive and wonderfully vivid and lyrical to boot.
