Why this must be read: Every fandom seems to have a version of "aliens made them do it" and Merlin's is "mythical creatures and/or magic made them do it." In this story and the next rec, we've got water creatures with magical seductive powers, which of course, transfer to Merlin and Arthur. Except as with most good fic, it's not just the magic that's making our boys lust after one another, and the two must discover that those feelings have been there all along. That's the real magic.

This story is both lyrical and passionate, and although it's [livejournal.com profile] lyra_wing's only Merlin story (so far), we can hope there will be more like it.

"This… is a problem." Merlin tried to remember where he put his clothes. He retrieved them from where they hung on a tree branch and tugged on his tunic.

"Well, yes, obviously," said Arthur witheringly.

Merlin knew better than to engage Arthur when he was in a mood like this, said nothing. He laced up his trousers and brushed the grass off his feet before pulling on his boots.

Arthur sat in the shade of a tree, forearms resting on his bent knees, seemingly unconcerned about his nudity. His brow was furrowed, and he didn't look exactly angry but he looked like he was thinking hard. His skin was dappled with sunlight, golden, and Merlin couldn't look away from him.

"What do we do?" Arthur seemed to be staring at some destination beyond the horizon.

"We'll… talk to Gaius. I'm sure he can find some explanation for this." Merlin retrieved Arthur's clothes from where they lay by the campfire, and handed them to Arthur. "It has to do with that creature in the lake, I'm sure of it."

"All right then." Arthur looked at the offered clothes blankly for a moment, and it seemed he really had forgotten he was naked. He blinked, and then took the clothes. He pulled on his tunic. "It's only half a day to Camelot. We'll just… think of other things in the meanwhile."

Merlin nodded. "Right."

It was a good plan.

Except for how it was a completely useless plan.
