Why this must be read: Her fics are often very dark, but also emotionally complex. This one is no exception. Set during Teen Titans issue #44, Slade has taken some of the Titans, both old and new, captive, in his attempt to get his children back. There's a pre-established relationship with Dick, and Slade uses every advantage against the former Robin, and then the ending is just emotionally draining. This is not a happy fic--there's non-con and graphic sex and a lot of angst. If that's your cup of tea, this fic is just plain wonderful. Read it and then every other dark fic she's written, most of them with this pairing.
“Why call them Titans Slade?
“It's your team.” Dick remembers being fifteen, when he and four other kids thought they could change the world. They did some good, but in hindsight he can see what a poor job they did in really taking care of one another.
“I'm not a Titan anymore.” The Titans have moved past what he helped make them. The current team is not really his Titans. They are his brother's and he couldn't be prouder of the legacy.
“Once a Titan always a Titan Grayson. No one knows that better than you.” Dick would like to think that but he knows deep down that it is not fully the truth.
“Rose and Joey still belong there Slade. Let go of them for their sakes. I'm an outsider now.” Slade knows that he is in no way referring to the team that Roy built and he now leads. Dick has never fit in with that group anymore than he fits in with the current team of Titans. He stands on the edge, not really a Titan due to the makeup of the team and his age difference and not really an Outsider because of his unwillingness to ever bond with them.
“You were never meant to be alone kid.” The words take Dick back to when he was seventeen, when he had still been bright eyed, innocent, and with Slade for the first time. Dick remembers being all laughter and fumbling hands while Slade had loomed over him – patient, amused, and a mentor in ways that Bruce could never be.
The kiss they share now is sweeter, and softer, like their early ones and it tears Dick's heart to shreds when it ends because the man that mentored him is gone. He looks anywhere but at Slade's face. The man grabs his bound arms and Dick's legs get twisted in the loose material of the suit hanging around his waist as Slade shoves him towards the bed.
