Why this must be read: I couldn't let a month of recommendations go by without at least one story featuring Connor, who was my first love in this fandom. When I need a Connor fix, I often turn to MacNair, whose stories are always insightful and raw and show everything that I love about Connor and Duncan and their relationship as student and teacher, companions, friends. "Strong Enough" tells of a time in Duncan's life of great pain and hurt and how Connor was there to help, even if Duncan didn't want help. MacNair's style is gentle, leading you quietly through Duncan's pain to the healing on the other side. It is followed by two other stories, Bridges and Lost and Not Found, which are also worth a read.

“Do you think we ever lived like this? Like a tribe, together with a common language – a reason and a name for each living thing?” The soft accented voice reached him where he stood watching the flames. He didn't turn his head, unable to look away from this ending to Little Deer and Kahani. “Did we once belong somewhere, a time...a place...however briefly?”

He had built the pyre himself, silently and bitterly. Connor had sat with the bodies of the little family and watched him work. At one point Duncan glanced over to find that his old teacher was holding both Kahani and Little Deer by the hand, stroking the long fingers over theirs in silent benediction. It struck right to his core. There was darkness in his soul, watching and waiting for him.
