Why this must be read: I decided, for this rec, to reach back into XF fandom history a bit. This story is part of a series, though it stands alone quite well, and is set pre-series (also, it's a two-parter, and both parts are at the same link). The Cigarette-Smoking Man remained an enigmatic figure throughout the series, and while he was overused by the end of it, his backstory was definitely one of the most interesting aspects of the mytharc.

Here, CSM is having an affair with Teena Mulder, the mother of our show's hero. It's a study of CSM balancing his affair and his marriage, and it's wonderfully written. It's hard to wrap our heads around titular characters that aren't fleshed out on the show, and writing them successfully in fanfiction is even harder. PD did a great job here. It's also a great "set piece" story - set when the characters are younger, in the 1960s, it brings the show's rhythm and voice into that era effortlessly.

Her hair is pale, the color of cornsilk. She is even thinner than Teena, as
thin as a child; I can feel the delicate bones of her ribcage under my left
hand. She is too thin. Teena in my arms is all warmth and soft curves.

Cassandra smiles up at me. "You're a good dancer. Most men don't know how to
lead any more."

I am an unremarkable dancer. If I'd still had any doubts about her
willingness to flirt, it would be gone now. "You're easy to dance with," I
say, unable to think of anything more original.

Soon the music fades. Another slow tune begins -- "Since I Fell for You" --
and we dance to that one, too. By the end of the song she has melted against
me, every inch of her slim body pressed pliantly to mine. I wonder how much
champagne she has had. I can recall her sipping at least two glasses, and I
wasn't even paying attention.
