Why This Must Be Read: There are very few authors writing Elle/Luke. Luckily for Elle/Luke fans, the authors who are writing the ship are phenomenal. stainofmylove is probably the most prolific author for the pairing and my personal favourite. She has a great grasp of both Elle and Luke's voices, and manages to write fics that are sexy, funny, introspective, and plotty all at once.
It was very difficult for me to choose which of stainofmylove's fics to rec this month and in the end I settled on this gen piece that focuses on Elle and Luke's childhoods. One of the many things I love about this is the unusual structure. Elle and Luke never meet and, aside from thematically in terms of abandonment and loneliness, their lives don't intersect, yet the fic never feels disjointed. It's two beautiful character studies masterfully intertwined.
The fic deals with a difficult subject matter (self-harm) in a very mature way, focusing on the emotional turmoil that leads both Elle and Luke to harm themselves, without ever feeling cliché (or "emo"). It's refreshing to see modes of self-harm other than cutting explored in a fic (in this case, deliberate bruising and burning, respectively). Overall, this fic is utterly heartbreaking and absolutely beautiful.
Excerpt:
The first one blooms on her skin at age six. She’s tired and shaking and strapped down to her bed without any memory of how she got there. There’s a tiny prick of blood in the crook of her elbow, skin surrounding it mottled purples and yellows and blues. She calls for her daddy for what feels like hours.
“What is that?” does her best not to cry, he hates that. “It hurts, Daddy.”
“But isn’t purple your favorite color, Elle?”
It is.
