Why this must be read:

The final part of this story was just posted this morning, which means I'm lucky enough to get to rec the whole thing!

In this modern AU, Arthur and Merlin (and Morgana and Gwen) are in the Combat Weather Team of the United States Air Force. It does seem like an incongruous fit at first- Merlin in the military? you're probably wondering- but [livejournal.com profile] franticsga is so familiar with this world that she makes everyone feel perfectly at home in it. Her Arthur in particular is my favorite- heartbreakingly noble and repressed- and the boys' slow-building relationship is wonderfully done.

The first time Lt Arthur Pendragon properly met A1C Merlin Emrys, he was doing push-ups on the floor of the Fort Campbell weather station.

"Bit quick, isn't it?" he asked Lt Lefey, who rolled her eyes.

"He's only been here two hours," she said. "He didn't salute the Colonel."

"Ah." Nothing unusual, then. Colonel Pendragon was a fanatic about protocol. Arthur poked his head around the corner of the observation room and watched as a skinny, dark-haired kid pushed away. "How many?"

"Fifty, I think," Lefey replied. "But he's forgotten how many he's done. He's on 74."

"That's got to be fifty by now," SrA Wyfar called from the other side of the room.

"Spoilsport," Lefey murmured under her breath, then raised her voice. "That's enough, Emrys."

The kid hopped to his feet, nearly taking out one of the desks. He saw Arthur and they both paled.

"You," Arthur said.

"You," Emrys said. He looked barely winded, although his cheeks were pink. Arthur fought the urge to push him.

"Do you know Airman Emrys, Pendragon?" Lefey asked, looking back and forth between the two of them.

"Yes," he said tightly. "Airman Emrys called me-- let's see, what was it? An asshole?-- when he bumped into me outside the PX yesterday."

"You bumped into me," Emrys began, but Arthur didn't want to hear his stupid voice another second.

"Your arms are going to be the biggest thing on you." He pointed to the floor again. Emrys rolled his eyes and resumed his prior position. "50 again, I think, and this time you can count them aloud. And airman?"

Emrys looked up at him while his arms flexed, beads of sweat beginning to form along the edges of his dark hair.

"Add a
sir onto each one."
