Not Easy Sport by bellonablack (R)
I've had a lot of fun reccing this month -- it was super hard to decide what to rec with so many great fics out there, but hopefully I've recced some things that you've enjoyed. :)
Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Monica/Sylar
Length: 3,466
Author on LJ:
bellonablack
Author Website: Fic Journal:
cross_rubicon
Why This Must Be Read: I'm probably biased in reccing this because it was written for a prompt I left on one of the various kink memes, but bellonablack filled it so superbly, it really does deserve to be recced in its own right.
The prompt that spawned this was simply: 'Monica/Sylar: the serial killer & St Joan, mortal enemies and sometime lovers'. bellonablack took that and wove a rich and compelling relationship between Sylar and Monica, caught in the classic comic book hero/villain battle, each trying to stop the other but, in a way, also very much reliant on each other. The tone is perfect for Heroes which itself draws a lot of its inspiration from comics. The fic is funny, action-packed and heartbreaking all at once.
Excerpt:
“I’m not much of a hero. I’m just trying to do the right thing,” she said, and he tilted his head, giving her a downright creepy smile. “Make a difference.”
“And what can you do?”
“Let me down—and I’ll show you.”
“Yeah right. That’s a compelling argument,” he snorted.
“Scared?” She dared him.
“Hardly.”
He stepped back, unpinning her. That had been so unnerving, pinned there. Surreal. He was dressed in all black too, skulking and looming and all that silly stuff, and so Monica had to ask.
”What you, a grown man, playing villain? You could do a lot of good on your own, make something of yourself. Not taking from other people like a common thief.”
