The Soul Selects Her Own Society by Violet (R)

Hi, I'm Tali and I'll be the West Wing reccer here for April. I have been a fan of the show since it first started and while my fic reading has waned a little bit since the middle of Season Three, I still have a lot of recs from when I used to read fic rather obsessively. Originally I was mostly a CJ/Toby shipper but my taste has broadened to the point where I am willing to give nearly any pairing (slash or het) or type of fic a go as long as it's well written and hopefully my recs will reflect that. Anyway, I'll stop chatting and start reccing ...

Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: CJ/Toby

Why this must be read:

This is an older fic (set during Season Two) but definitely still a personal favourite of mine. Violet (also known as Luna on some sites) writes beautifully and manages to capture all that's sweet, angsty and complicated about Toby and CJ's relationship even in this relatively short piece. Told mostly from CJ's POV, it managees to get inside her head but that is also balanced out by some great dialogue, nice descriptive passages and even, heaven forbid, a little bit of politics as well. ;)

She wanted to protect herself. She reached down and pulled the blankets up, rolled onto her side and curled up with her knees against her chest. There was a stack of magazines under her nightstand. She was lying next to one of her best friends, and she'd learned that he thought about her when he read poetry. She wondered when he'd started reading and remembering poetry.

He was an expert in language. But so was she, at least when it came to polling, to asking the right questions. If she asked herself if she loved him, the answer was clearly yes -- but that wasn't the question. And with Ainsley Hayes, the Ukraine and Josiah Bartlet hanging over their heads, with the White House and its faulty cooling system waiting for them every day, she knew clearly that she could not be in love with him.

This fic must have also gotten into my subconscious somehow because when I rewatched my Season Two DVDs I was looking for one of the things mentioned in this fic, which you can't actually see happening in the episode its self. Anyway, I'm being cryptic, if you're a fan of Toby/CJ, you should definitely give this fic a read.
