The Weight of Words by Waldorph (NC-17)
Hi guys! I'll be reccing Merlin for October. I apologize for the late start - have just started grad school and am still adjusting to the workload. :) I'm an unashamed multi-shipper and gen-lover, so expect to see all sort of recs this month with multiple pairings and hopefully a couple of genfics too.
Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Length: ~7,000
Author on LJ:
waldorph
Author Website: Masterlist of Fanfic
Why this must be read:
When Arthur is worried, it's easier to sit, tense in his chair watching the fire devour a log, and let Merlin voice those worries. Easier to let them hurtle from Merlin's lips and echo around the room until they become too much, and Arthur has to tell him to shut up, tell the fear and concern and worry to shut up. And Merlin will look at him, and there will be something like relief in his eyes; as though Arthur has made things better; as though he hears that in Arthur's command to shut up there is Merlin's own concern mirrored back.
This is a fantastic look at Arthur, smart and savvy to the burden involved in being the future ruler of Camelot. It showcases a side of his character that we see only glimpses of in the show (and more often in fanfic). And his slow, hesitant trust of Merlin and their fledging relationships unfolds at a teasing pace until the very end ,when it concludes most satisfyingly. Morgana's characterization and rapport with Arthur also work very well in the context of this piece. Highly recommended as an Arthur character piece.
