Title: Transposable Elements by Malograntum Vitiorum
Fandom: THE X FILES
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Future Less Vivid
Why this must be read: Some of my favorite post-eps are the ones that delve into the 'afterward' for supporting and minor characters; so often on the show, their fate and their feelings toward the unexplainable situations of the mytharc went unexplored, which left a ripe jumping-off point for fanfic.
In this post-ep to 'Sixth Extinction', Malograntum explores the afterward for Amina Ngebe, the female doctor who assisted Scully in uncovering the artifact on the beach in Africa. What's amazing about this story is how thoroughly we are dropped into Amina's world; having seen the Ivory Coast only through Scully's perspective onscreen, it's a sharp contrast to see it from someone who lives there. And as a fellow scientist, Amina struggles with the same things Scully has for years: how do you reconcile your trust in science with paranormal events you've seen, and with your religious beliefs? That is one of the main themes of The X Files, and I think it gives both the story and the show more depth to see it examined again here by Amina.
I once saw the elegance of science as an expression of the Creator's perfect design. After the artifact, I tried to see as I had before, but I could never banish those symbols from my mind--the word of God on a spaceship beside the beautiful genome that brought tears to Dr. Scully's eyes. Each time I touched chalk to the board, some part of me thought of that ship and of what it could all mean.
